About DNG Format

DNG (Digital Negative)

The universal raw format designed to stand the test of time.

Overview

DNG (Digital Negative) is an open, royalty-free raw image format developed by Adobe. It was created to solve a major problem in digital photography: every camera manufacturer uses their own proprietary raw format (CR3, NEF, ARW, etc.), and when a new camera comes out, old software can't read its files. DNG acts as a universal container for raw sensor data. It preserves all the original image information—just like a proprietary raw file—but wraps it in a standardized, publicly documented structure. This ensures that your photos will remain readable by software decades from now, even if the camera manufacturer goes out of business.

Technical Details

DNG is based on the TIFF/EP standard. It stores the raw sensor data (Bayer pattern or X-Trans) along with metadata defining how that data should be interpreted (color matrices, white balance, linearization tables). Uniquely, DNG also supports 'Linear DNG' (partially processed/demosaiced data) and 'Lossy DNG' (which applies JPEG-like compression to raw data, significantly reducing file size while retaining raw editing flexibility).

History

Adobe launched DNG in 2004. While initially met with skepticism, it has been adopted natively by several manufacturers (Leica, Pentax, Hasselblad, and most smartphones including iPhone and Pixel) and is the standard format for mobile raw photography.

Common Use Cases

  • Archival: Converting proprietary raw files to DNG for long-term storage.
  • Mobile Photography: Shooting raw on smartphones.
  • Software Compatibility: Opening files from a brand-new camera in older software.

Advantages

  • Open Standard
  • Embedded Checksums
  • Fast Load Times

Limitations

  • Conversion Step
  • Proprietary Metadata Loss

About ICO Format

Microsoft Icon

The standard format for icons on Microsoft Windows and the web (favicons).

Overview

The ICO format is a container for one or more images at multiple sizes and color depths. It allows a single file to store appropriate icons for different display contexts (e.g., 16x16 for menus, 256x256 for desktop). It supports transparency and, in modern versions, PNG compression.

Technical Details

ICO files contain a header followed by an icon directory that lists each image entry. Each entry can use either BMP (uncompressed) or PNG compression. The format supports 1, 4, 8, 16, 24, and 32-bit color depths with optional alpha channels.

History

Introduced with Microsoft Windows 1.0. It became the standard for website favicons with the release of Internet Explorer 5.

Common Use Cases

  • Windows Application Icons: Primary icon format for Windows applications and system files
  • Website Favicons: Standard format for website icons displayed in browser tabs and bookmarks
  • Desktop Shortcuts: Icons for Windows desktop shortcuts and file associations

Advantages

  • Multiple Sizes
  • Broad Compatibility
  • Transparency Support

Limitations

  • Complex Structure
  • Limited Platform Use
  • Size Limitations
