X3F is the proprietary raw format for Sigma cameras using the Foveon X3 sensor. Unlike traditional Bayer sensors that capture one color per pixel, Foveon sensors capture Red, Green, and Blue at every single pixel location using stacked layers. This results in X3F files containing three full layers of color data, making them structurally very different from other raw files.
X3F files store the data from the three vertical layers of the sensor. Because there is no demosaicing required (no interpolation of colors), X3F files produce images with incredible micro-contrast and color resolution, but they are notoriously difficult for third-party software to decode correctly.
