VICAR (Video Image Communication and Retrieval) is an image processing software system and file format developed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for processing data from unmanned planetary spacecraft. It is one of the oldest digital image formats still in use, dating back to the mid-1960s.
A VICAR file consists of a text header (labels) followed by binary image data. The header uses `KEYWORD=VALUE` syntax to describe the image dimensions, data types, and mission-specific telemetry. It handles multi-dimensional data (3D spectral cubes) long before consumer formats did.
