Ultra HDR (often just 'Ultra HDR Image Format') is a format introduced by Google in Android 14. It solves the problem of sharing HDR photos by embedding a 'Gain Map' (a grayscale auxiliary image) into a standard JPEG file's metadata. Standard viewers see the normal SDR photo. HDR-capable displays (like modern phones) use the gain map to boost brightness in highlights, reconstructing the true HDR scene.
The file is a completely valid JPEG (ISO/IEC 10918-1). The magic happens in the XMP metadata (Adobe Gain Map standard or Google's equivalent), where a second, smaller version of the image (or a monochrome map) is stored. The renderer calculates the final pixel value: `SDR_Pixel + (Gain * Boost)`. This allows 8-bit JPEGs to effectively act like 10-bit HDR files without breaking compatibility.
