MrSID (pronounced 'Mister Sid') stands for Multi-resolution Seamless Image Database. It is a proprietary compression technology developed by LizardTech (now Extensis) designed to handle the enormous file sizes associated with aerial photography, satellite imagery, and digitized maps. A single MrSID file can contain terabytes of pixel data compressed down to a fraction of the size, viewable instantly at any zoom level.
MrSID uses wavelet compression (similar to JPEG 2000) to store image data. This provides a multi-resolution pyramid structure, allowing software to fetch only the data needed for the current screen viewport (e.g., loading a 100GB city map on a laptop in seconds). It natively handles geospatial positioning metadata.
Developed at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in the 90s to store FBI fingerprint archives. LizardTech commercialized it, and it became the de facto standard for the GIS industry.
