RLA (Run Length Encoded Type A) is an image format developed by Wavefront Technologies (later Alias|Wavefront) for storing 3D rendered images. Its key feature was the ability to store 'G-Buffer' or auxiliary data channels—such as Z-depth, Object ID, Material ID, and Normal vectors—multiplexed into the same file alongside the RGB image.
The format uses RLE compression to keep file sizes manageable. It allows for arbitrary extra channels beyond RGBA. This made it a favorite in early digital compositing workflows (like in After Effects or Combustion) because a single file allowed the compositor to apply depth-of-field effects or color correct specific 3D objects using the ID channels.
A standard in the 90s visual effects industry. It was crucial for the 'Ex-Machina' compositing style. It was largely superseded by the RPF (Rich Pixel Format) and eventually OpenEXR.
