About RAD

Overview

The Radiance HDR format (often designated as `.hdr`, `.pic`, or `rad` in legacy systems) was the first widely adopted file format for High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging. Unlike standard images that store pixel brightness as 0-255, Radiance stores real-world light values (radiance) that can capture the full brightness of the sun and the darkest shadows in the same file.

Technical Details

It uses the RGBE (Red, Green, Blue, Exponent) pixel format. Each channel (R, G, B) gets 8 bits, and they share a single 8-bit exponent. This 32-bit-per-pixel packing allows it to represent a massive dynamic range (covering virtually all visible light) much more efficiently than raw floating point formats, though at the cost of some color precision in highly saturated, bright areas (due to the shared exponent).

History

Developed by Greg Ward in the late 1980s for the Radiance lighting simulation software. It became the industry standard for HDRI lighting in 3D rendering (IBL) in the early 2000s.

Common Use Cases

  • 3D Rendering: Environment maps (skyboxes) used to light 3D scenes.
  • Photography: Merging bracketed photos into a single master file.
