PostScript Level 2 (PS2) was a significant upgrade to the original PostScript language, released by Adobe in 1991. It addressed the major limitations of Level 1, specifically introducing standardized color support (CMYK, CIE), compression filters (LZW, DCT for JPEG), and improved memory management. It made PostScript significantly faster and more capable for color printing.
PS2 files are valid PostScript files but utilize newer operators (like `rectfill` instead of constructing rectangles manually) and built-in compression dictionaries. This allowed images to be stored much more efficiently inside the print stream. The 'Level 2' distinction was critical in the 90s because older Level 1 printers would crash if sent a Level 2 file.
Released in 1991. It standardized many extensions that vendors had patched into Level 1. It was eventually superseded by PostScript 3 (1997), but Level 2 remains a highly compatible baseline.
