PostScript (PS) is a Turing-complete programming language optimized for vector graphics and page layout. Developed by Adobe, it allowed computers to describe pages to printers in a device-independent way. Unlike a bitmap which tells a printer *where* to put dots, PostScript tells the printer *how* to draw the page ('Draw a circle here', 'Use Helvetica'), allowing for infinite resolution scaling.
A PS file is an ASCII text file containing code. It uses a Reverse Polish Notation (stack-based) syntax. It can define procedures, variables, and loops. A printer with a PostScript Raster Image Processor (RIP) compiles and executes this code to generate the final raster image on paper. EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) is a subset designed to be embedded in other documents.
Released by Adobe in 1984. It fueled the desktop publishing revolution (Apple LaserWriter + PageMaker). It was the dominant industry standard until PDF (which is essentially a static, optimized version of PostScript) superseded it in the late 90s.
