About PNG48

Overview

PNG-48 is a high-precision variant of the PNG format designed for professional imaging workflows. While standard PNG-24 uses 8 bits per color channel (Red, Green, Blue), PNG-48 uses 16 bits per channel. This seemingly small change results in a massive increase in color precision: from 256 shades per color to 65,536 shades per color. This depth allows PNG-48 to store over 281 trillion distinct colors, far exceeding what the human eye can distinguish. Why is this useful? It allows for extreme adjustments in post-processing—such as brightening shadows or stretching contrast—without introducing 'banding' artifacts or losing detail. It is widely used in astrophotography, medical imaging, and digital archival.

Technical Details

PNG-48 stores 16 bits of data for each of the three color channels (16+16+16 = 48 bits). This is often referred to as '16-bit color' in image editing software (referring to the channel depth, not the total depth). The file structure is identical to other PNGs, but the bit depth flag in the IHDR chunk is set to 16. Compression is still lossless DEFLATE, but because 16-bit data contains more 'noise' (subtle variations) than 8-bit data, it typically compresses less efficiently, resulting in significantly larger file sizes.

History

Support for 16-bit channels was included in the original PNG specification to ensure it could compete with TIFF for professional and scientific applications. While web browsers have supported displaying PNG-48 for years (usually by downsampling it to 8-bit for the screen), it remains a niche format for the web due to its file size, finding its home primarily in production pipelines.
