PHM (Portable Half-Float Map) is a variant of the PFM format. Where PFM stores pixels as 32-bit single-precision floating point numbers, PHM stores them as 16-bit half-precision floats. This format is widely used in graphics hardware (GPUs) and HDR imaging where 32-bit precision is overkill and consumes too much memory.
The format follows the PFM structure but uses a different magic number in the header (typically `PH` or similar specific to the implementation, or relies on specific file extension conventions with Netpbm tools). The pixel data is raw binary 16-bit IEEE 754-2008 half-precision floating point values. This cuts the file size in half compared to PFM while maintaining enough dynamic range for most lighting data.
Evolved alongside the adoption of 'Half' precision types in GPUs (NVIDIA Cg, HLSL) and the OpenEXR format. It provided a simple raw dump format for this data type.
