Pentax Electronic File
Pentax's native raw format, offering a choice against DNG.
PEF is the proprietary raw image format used by Pentax (Ricoh) cameras. Uniquely, Pentax DSLRs (like the K-1 and K-3) allow users to choose between saving files as PEF or Adobe DNG in-camera. PEF files contain the raw sensor data and proprietary metadata that is optimized for Pentax's own software.
PEF is a TIFF-based format using lossless compression. It is functionally very similar to DNG, but because it is proprietary, it may contain specific 'MakerNotes' that third-party software might not fully decode (though this is rare nowadays).
Pentax has used PEF since their first digital SLRs. Despite adopting DNG as an in-camera option, they have kept PEF as the default native format.

The QOI specification fits on a single page of paper. It achieves compression ratios similar to PNG but encodes 20x-50x faster and decodes 3x-4x faster. It uses a simple streaming algorithm with a running array of previously seen colors.
Released in 2021 as a reaction to the complexity of formats like PNG and the slowness of their reference implementations. It quickly gained viral popularity in the developer community.
