PDF/A is a standardized version of PDF (ISO 19005) specialized for the long-term archiving of digital documents. It ensures that the document can be reproduced exactly the same way today and in the future, regardless of the tools used. This is achieved by forbidding features that rely on external resources or system specific fonts.
PDF/A imposes strict rules on the PDF structure. It requires: 1. All fonts must be embedded. 2. All color data must be device-independent (i.e., ICC profiles embedded). 3. Audio, video, and JavaScript are banned. 4. Encryption is banned. 5. External content references are banned. There are several conformance levels (1a, 1b, 2a, 2b, etc.) balancing strict accessibility with visual fidelity.
