PCT (or PICT) was the standard metafile format for the Apple Macintosh. Much like WMF on Windows, PICT was capable of storing both bitmap images and vector graphics (QuickDraw drawing commands). It was the primary format for the Mac clipboard and for sharing graphics between Mac applications for nearly 20 years.
A PICT file is a serialized stream of QuickDraw drawing operations. It can contain simple instructions like 'draw line' or 'draw rectangle', as well as bitmapped (raster) blocks. Later versions (PICT2) added support for color and 32-bit images. It uses PackBits formatting for RLE compression and can even encapsulate JPEG data.
Released with the original Macintosh in 1984. It was the backbone of Mac graphics until Mac OS X replaced QuickDraw with Quartz (PDF-based rendering), effectively deprecating PICT in favor of PDF and TIFF.
