Kodak Photo CD (PCD) was a proprietary system launched in 1992 for digitizing and storing 35mm film on compact discs. The format was revolutionary for its 'Image Pac' structure, which stored five (or six) different resolutions of the same image in a single file, ranging from a tiny thumbnail (Base/16) to high-definition (16 Base).
PCD uses the PhotoYCC color space, designed to match the characteristics of television display and film. The file stores a 'Base' image (512x768) and uses mathematical residuals (deltas) to reconstruct higher resolutions (1024x1536, 2048x3072, etc.) or downsample to lower ones. It uses a form of chroma subsampling and Huffman coding.
Development by Kodak in 1990. It was aimed at consumers to view photos on TV via CD-i players and computers. It failed to gain mass adoption due to proprietary licensing and the rise of digital cameras and JPEG.
