OpenRaster (ORA) is an open, standardized file format for exchanging layered raster images between applications. It was created to break the vendor lock-in of Adobe's proprietary PSD format. An ORA file is actually a ZIP archive containing a stack of PNG images (one for each layer) and an XML file (`stack.xml`) defining their order, opacity, and blending modes.
Following the Open Document strategy, ORA wraps standard open formats. The image data is stored as standard PNGs (ensuring good compression and broad compatibility), and the structure is XML. This design means even if you don't have an ORA editor, you can unzip the file and access the individual layer content.
Initiated in 2006 by the Free Desktop.org community, specifically developers from Krita and GIMP. The goal was to have a common 'work in progress' format for open source digital painting tools.
