The MPO (Multi-Picture Object) format is a container for storing multiple JPEG images in a single file options. It was adopted by the CIPA (Camera & Imaging Products Association) as a standard for stereoscopic photography. It allows devices like the Nintendo 3DS and 3D-capable digital cameras (Fujifilm Real 3D) to save left and right eye images together in a single file.
An MPO file effectively concatenates multiple JPEG images. The first image in the file acts as the 'representative' image (usually the left eye view) and looks like a normal JPEG to any software that doesn't understand MPO. Subsequent images (e.g. right eye view) are hidden in metadata tags or appended after the first image's End-Of-Image marker.
Standardized around 2009 (CIPA DC-007) to address the fragmentation of 3D image formats. It saw widespread use with the launch of the Nintendo 3DS in 2011, which used MPO as its native format for 3D photos.
