The MONO format (often associated with ImageMagick or raw binary dumps) represents a bi-level image where every pixel is stored as a single bit. There are no headers, no palettes, and no compression (usually). It is the most basic digital representation of an image, used in low-level systems, thermal printing, and legacy graphics.
In a MONO file, 8 pixels are packed into a single byte. A bit set to 1 usually represents black (or ink), and 0 represents white (or no ink), though this polarity can vary by system (MSB/LSB first, or 0=Black vs 1=Black). Because there is no file header specifying dimensions, you often need to know the width and height in advance to display it correctly.
Bi-level bitmaps date back to the earliest digital displays and printers. While file formats like PBM (Portable Bitmap) added headers to describe dimensions, 'MONO' often refers to the headerless raw data stream used for direct hardware interfacing.
