JPEG XR (Extended Range), originally developed by Microsoft as 'HD Photo', is a still image compression standard designed to improve upon the limitations of the classic JPEG format. It introduces support for high dynamic range (HDR) imagery, lossless compression, and alpha transparency.
JPEG XR uses a reversible color transform and a lifting-based reversible lapped biorthogonal transform, allowing it to support both lossy and lossless compression within the same bitstream syntax. It supports a wide range of pixel formats, including 16-bit and 32-bit integers, and 32-bit floating-point values for HDR.
First debuted by Microsoft as Windows Media Photo in 2006, then renamed HD Photo. It was standardized by the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) as ISO/IEC 29199-2 in 2009. Despite its technical merits, it struggled to gain traction against the ubiquity of JPEG and the rise of WebP.
