About JPS

Overview

JPS (JPEG Stereo) is a file format used to store stereoscopic 3D images. Ideally, a JPS file allows a single file to contain two separate images—one for the left eye and one for the right eye—typically placed side-by-side. Under the hood, a JPS file is simply a standard JPEG file with a different extension and a specific layout convention, making it widely compatible with image viewers even if they don't render the 3D effect.

Technical Details

Technically, a JPS file is a standard JPEG image stream. The 'magic' lies in the arrangement of pixels. The image canvas contains two sub-images compressed as one. The most common layout is 'Side-by-Side' (SBS), where the left-eye view occupies the left half and the right-eye view the right half (or vice-versa for Cross-Eye). Because it uses standard JPEG compression (DCT based), it inherits all the pros and cons of JPEG: varying compression levels, 8-bit color, and wide decode support. Metadata or file headers (like the '_JPSJPS_' signature in APP3 markers) inform the viewer on how to split and present the images for 3D viewing.

History

Popularized in the early 2000s alongside the rise of consumer 3D photography and NVIDIA's 3D Vision technology. It solved the problem of sharing 3D images by using an existing, ubiquitous container (JPEG). It became a de-facto standard for sharing 3D photos on the web before more advanced formats like MPO (Multi-Picture Object) were standardized.

Common Use Cases

  • 3D Photography: Storing photos taken with dual-lens stereo cameras or rigs.
  • VR Content: Simple distribution of static 3D scenes for VR headsets.
  • Cross-Eye/Parallel Viewing: Sharing 'magic eye' style 3D images for viewing without glasses.
  • Archiving Stereoscopic Slides: Digitizing vintage stereo slide pairs.
