JBIG (Joint Bi-level Image Experts Group) is a standard for the lossless compression of bi-level (black and white) images. It was designed primarily for fax machines and scanned documents, offering significantly better compression than older standards like CCITT Group 4.
JBIG (ISO/IEC 11544) uses arithmetic coding (the QM coder) to achieve high compression ratios for binary images. It supports progressive encoding, meaning an image can be decoded at incrementally higher resolutions. This was intended to allow faster browsing of document databases.
