About FPX

Overview

FlashPix (FPX) is a legacy image format that uses a 'pyramid' structure. It stores the same image at multiple resolutions within a single file—from full high-res down to a tiny thumbnail. This was designed to allow early, slow computers and dial-up internet connections to fetch only the resolution they needed for the current screen view, rather than downloading the entire massive file.

Technical Details

FlashPix is built on Microsoft's OLE II structured storage container (similar to the old .doc Word format). Internally, the image data is tiled into 64x64 pixel blocks. Each tile can be independently compressed (usually with JPEG) or uncompressed. The file contains a hierarchy of these tiled images. Because it uses the OLE container, an FPX file is essentially a 'mini file system' inside a file. This made it complex to parse and susceptible to fragmentation.

History

Launched in 1996 with huge fanfare by a consortium called the 'Digital Imaging Group' (Kodak, HP, Microsoft, Live Picture). It was meant to be the 'next JPG'. However, it was over-engineered, slow to write, and complex to implement. As computers got faster and broadband arrived, the need for complex multi-resolution formats dwindled, and JPEG (and later JPEG 2000) won the war.

Common Use Cases

  • Early Web Zooming: Powers tech like 'Zoomify' where you can zoom into a product photo without downloading the whole thing.
  • Koda PhotoCD Alternatives: Used in some consumer photo editing software in the late 90s (like Microsoft Picture It!).
