FLIF (Free Lossless Image Format) was an experimental open-source image format that claimed to outperform PNG, lossless WebP, and lossless BPG in compression ratio. It used a unique compression algorithm called MANIAC (Meta-Adaptive Near-zero Integer Arithmetic Coding).
FLIF was notable for its 'responsive' nature. It could be decoded progressively, meaning a low-quality version of the image appeared almost immediately and refined as more data arrived. This is similar to interlaced PNG but much more effective.
