About FARBFELD

Overview

Farbfeld is a minimalist, uncompressed lossless image format developed by the suckless.org community. It was created to counter the complexity of formats like PNG and JPEG. Farbfeld enforces a single layout: 16-bit RGBA (64 bits per pixel) in big-endian, with no compression, no metadata, and no color pallets. This strict rigidity makes the format trivial to parse, allowing developers to write an image decoder in minutes rather than days. It relies on standard Unix tools (like `bzip2` or `zstd`) for compression, adhering to the Unix philosophy of doing one thing well.

Technical Details

A Farbfeld file is a stream of bytes. It starts with an 8-byte magic string `farbfeld`. The next 8 bytes define the width (32-bit integer) and height (32-bit integer). The rest of the file is raw pixel data: each pixel consists of 4 channels (Red, Green, Blue, Alpha), each 16 bits long, making 8 bytes per pixel. There is no 'End of File' marker or checksum. Data integrity is expected to be handled by the file system or transport layer. The lack of built-in compression usually results in large file sizes, but they compress extremely well with external tools because the data is highly structured.

History

Designed by Laslo Hunhold and the suckless.org community (known for the `dwm` window manager) as a reaction to 'bloated' and insecure image libraries like `libpng`. It is mainly used in minimalist Unix environments and by programmers who need a predictable intermediate format.

Common Use Cases

  • Unix Pipelines: Streaming image data between small, single-purpose tools (e.g., resizing, cropping) via stdin/stdout.
  • Intermediate Format: Converting a complex JPEG to Farbfeld to perform an algorithmic manipulation, then converting back.

Advantages

  • Simplicity
  • Security
  • Pipe Friendly

Limitations

  • Huge File Sizes
  • No Metadata
  • Niche Support
