About EXR

Overview

OpenEXR is a high-dynamic-range (HDR) image file format developed by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) for use in computer imaging applications. Unlike standard image formats that store color as integers (0-255), OpenEXR stores color as floating-point numbers (like 1.0, 0.004, 500.5). This allows it to represent a massive range of light values, from the deepest shadows to light sources thousands of times brighter than the sun. It is the backbone of the entire modern VFX industry, allowing CGI elements to be composited into live-action footage with perfect lighting accuracy.

Technical Details

OpenEXR supports 16-bit floating-point ('half'), 32-bit floating-point ('float'), and 32-bit integer pixels. The 'half' format is the most common, providing 30 stops of dynamic range—far more than the human eye can see or any camera can capture—while keeping file sizes reasonable. It also supports 'Deep Data', where a single pixel can store multiple color samples at different depths. This allows compositors to place objects 'inside' a rendered fog volume or behind semi-transparent glass without re-rendering the 3D scene.

History

ILM developed OpenEXR in 1999 during the production of *Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone* because existing formats (like TIFF and DPX) couldn't handle the dynamic range needed for their visual effects. They released it as an open-source library in 2003, and it quickly became the universal standard for VFX, winning an Academy Award for Technical Achievement.

Common Use Cases

  • VFX Compositing: Combining CGI and live action.
  • 3D Rendering: Output from render engines like Arnold, V-Ray, or Cycles.
  • HDR Environment Maps: 360° images used to light 3D scenes.

Advantages

  • Infinite Dynamic Range
  • Multi-Channel Support
  • Flexible Compression

Limitations

  • Not Web Compatible
  • Complexity
