About EPS

Overview

Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) is a graphics file format based on the PostScript page description language. Created by Adobe in the 1980s, it was the first widely adopted format that allowed vector graphics to be embedded (encapsulated) within other documents. For decades, it was the gold standard for sending logos, illustrations, and charts to commercial printers. Unlike a regular PostScript file which describes a whole page to a printer, an EPS file describes a single object or drawing constrained by a 'BoundingBox' rectangle. This allowed desktop publishing software like PageMaker and QuarkXPress to place the EPS graphic on a page alongside text.

Technical Details

An EPS file is essentially a PostScript program that draws an image. It starts with a DOS-style header or a simple text comment `%!PS-Adobe-3.0 EPSF-3.0`. Key to the format is the `%%BoundingBox:` comment, which tells the importing software exactly how much space the image occupies (in points). Because rendering PostScript code requires a heavy interpreter (RIP), EPS files often include a low-resolution 'preview' image (in TIFF or PICT format) stored in the binary header. This allows the layout software to show a pixelated version of the image on screen while the printer uses the high-quality vector data for the final output.

History

Adobe released the EPS specification in 1987. It revolutionized graphic design by enabling the separate creation of text and graphics. It reigned supreme until the early 2000s when Adobe shifted its focus to PDF, which creates smaller files, supports transparency natively, and handles fonts better. Today, EPS is considered a legacy format, maintained primarily for compatibility with old printing systems.
