Enhanced Metafile (EMF) is a proprietary vector graphics file format designed by Microsoft. It acts as a 'metafile', meaning it stores a sequence of drawing commands (like 'draw a circle here', 'write text there') rather than a grid of pixels. EMF was introduced to supersede the 16-bit Windows Metafile (WMF) format, offering support for 32-bit commands, better color handling, and device independence. EMF is deeply integrated into the Windows OS. When you print a document on Windows, the system often converts the pages into EMF files internally before sending them to the printer driver. It is also the format used when you copy vector graphics from Office applications to the clipboard.
An EMF file begins with a header record that includes the file description, dimensions, and version information. Following the header is a variable number of GDI (Graphics Device Interface) function records. These functions define pens, brushes, colors, fonts, and the geometric shapes to be drawn. A standard End-of-File record marks the conclusion. Because EMF records map directly to Windows API calls, rendering an EMF file on Windows is extremely fast. However, this same attribute makes it difficult to render correctly on non-Windows platforms like macOS or Linux without complex translation libraries.
EMF was introduced in 1993 with Windows NT 3.1. It was a necessary upgrade to the older WMF format, which originated in Windows 3.0 (1990) and was limited to 16-bit instructions. Later, Microsoft introduced 'EMF+' with GDI+, adding support for advanced features like anti-aliasing and alphablending, which can be embedded within standard EMF files.
