DjVu (pronounced 'déjà vu') is a computer file format designed primarily to store scanned documents. It excels at compressing color documents that contain a mix of text, line drawings, and photographs. By using advanced technologies like arithmetic coding and image layer separation (separating the text foreground from the paper background), DjVu can compress scanned pages to files sizes 5 to 10 times smaller than JPEG or TIFF, and often smaller than PDF. While PDF became the industry standard for digital-born documents, DjVu remains a favorite among archivists and digital libraries for scanned books because of its incredible efficiency and fast loading speeds.
DjVu divides an image into three layers: Background (low resolution, color), Foreground (high resolution, bitonal text/lines), and Mask (binary shape). The background layer is compressed using a wavelet-based algorithm (IW44), similar to JPEG 2000 but optimized for speed. The foreground text is compressed using a pattern-matching algorithm called JB2, which identifies repeated characters on a page and stores them only once. This 'segmentation' allows the text to remain razor-sharp at high zoom levels while the paper texture and background images are heavily compressed.
Developed at AT&T Labs in 1996 by a team including Yann LeCun (a pioneer of modern AI/Deep Learning) and Léon Bottou. It was originally marketed by LizardTech. Despite its technical superiority for scans, it lost the format war to Adobe's PDF, largely due to Adobe's Acrobat Reader being pre-installed on practically every computer.
