DIB (Device-Independent Bitmap) is a file format designed to define raster images in a way that is independent of the specific graphics hardware used to display it. In practice, a .dib file is virtually identical to a .bmp file. The main distinction is historical and technical: 'DIB' refers to the structure of the data in memory (the palette and pixel bits), while 'BMP' refers to the file on disk which includes a 14-byte file header. Today, the extension .dib is rarely used; the data is almost always saved with a .bmp extension. However, the term 'DIB' persists in Windows programming APIs as the standard way to pass images between applications (like the Clipboard).
A DIB structure contains a Bitmap Information Header (BITMAPINFOHEADER) followed by the color table (if using indexed color) and the array of pixel bits. The header defines the width, height, color depth, and compression method (usually BI_RGB, which means none). Pixel data is typically stored from bottom-to-top (upside down relative to most formats).
Introduced with OS/2 and Windows 3.0 to solve the problem of device dependence. Before DIBs, bitmaps were device-dependent (DDBs), meaning an image created on a screen with one color capability might look wrong on another. DIBs included explicit color profiling to ensure consistency.
