About APNG

Overview

APNG (Animated Portable Network Graphics) is an extension to the PNG format that allows for animated images. It was designed to be a modern replacement for the aging GIF format, offering support for 24-bit images and 8-bit transparency.

Technical Details

APNG works by storing the animation frames in a way that is backward compatible with standard PNG decoders. The first frame is stored as a normal PNG stream, so software that doesn't understand APNG will just show a static image. Subsequent frames are stored in separate chunks.

History

Proposed by Mozilla in 2004 as an alternative to MNG (which was too complex). It was initially rejected by the PNG group but gained adoption due to browser support.
